Enhancing Energy Performance and Indoor Comfort
at Litous Street Social Shelter
DC#3 is a multiapartment building that was initially designed and built as a hotel in 1962 prior to renovation and donation to the Municipality of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni during the 80s. It’s a 4-storey building with a total surface area on all floors of 1389m2 (388m2 each floor except for the 3rd that spans 225m2) and total building height of 11,5m. The building has a 32m long façade on Litous St. and is around 7m in depth, with open spaces at all sides of the plot. DC#3 does not have any heritage restrictions and thus a multifaceted approach to renovation can be employed.
OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of the use case of DC#3 are to improve: (a) energy performance and (b) thermal comfort and air quality of the building.
This is realized through retrofitting interventions, i.e. installation of the smart wall and commercial ETICs systems, installation of HVAC and PV systems as well as by implementing innovative building management systems.
USE CASE OVERVIEW
WORK CARRIED OUT SO FAR & MILESTONES ACHIEVED
Installation of commercial solar panels for domestic hot water
Installation of commercial ETICS on the North and East façade of the 1st floor and the North, South and East façade of the 2nd floor
Installation of PV systems designed and manufactured by METSOLAR
Installation of commercial heat pumps and fan coils
Several surveys and sessions have been carried out in pre, during and post-renovation phases with the residents, staff and building owner of DC3 to:
assess the quality of the indoor environment and smart technologies readiness
facilitate decision-making and reduce the performance gap
establish trust and communication
REMAINING WORK
Continuous monitoring of the energy consumption is taking place along with monitoring of the indoor air quality.
EXPECTED IMPACT
The expected impact in relation to the primary energy consumption and the related CO2 emissions has been calculated by AMS per floor and is presented in the following Table.
| Studied areas | State | Energy class | Primary energy consumed | CO2 emissions | Reduction |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ground floor | Before renovation | F | 259.5 kWh/m2 | 81.3 kg/m2 | 92.6% |
| After renovation | A | 19.2 kWh/m2 | 1.2 kg/m2 | ||
| 1st floor | Before renovation | F | 295.9 kWh/m2 | 94.4 kg/m2 | 60.3% |
| After renovation | C | 117.3 kWh/m2 | 39.1 kg/m2 | ||
| 2nd floor | Before renovation | G | 424.2 kWh/m2 | 127.0 kg/m2 | 17.1% |
| After renovation | F | 351.3 kWh/m2 | 109.1 kg/m2 |
